Hampshire County
TAX LIEN SALE INFORMATION
The Hampshire County Tax Lien Sale is held annually for one day between October 14 and November 23.  The
exact date of the sale will be scheduled in late September.  A complete list of the delinquent taxes, as of October
1st, is published in the HAMPSHIRE REVIEW approximately one month prior to the sale and will run for three
consecutive weeks.  You may access this information on their website, www.hampshirereview.com, in the legal
section.  We will also have a listing provided on our website, www.hampshirecountysheriffwv.com that we will
update periodically and can be accessed through the Treasurer’s Office link.  A copy of the listing is also
available to view in our office, but we will not mail copies.  If you are interested in seeing the general location of
the property, you can visit the Assessor’s Office or look on their website, www.co.hampshire.wv.us.

The sale will start on the specified date at 10:00 AM. All purchasers must be present or represented by a third
party the day of the tax lien sale.  We do not accept bids through the mail or over the telephone.  All potential
purchasers must register prior to the start of the sale with the name, address, and telephone number they want
recorded on the certificate of sale.  An updated listing of delinquent taxes will be distributed prior to the sale with
the amount listed for starting bid.  All bids will start no lower than the delinquent tax amount plus the current tax
amount and will go to the highest bidder.  All successful bidders must wait until after the conclusion of all sales to
pay.  Payment is due in full on that date with no exceptions.  Payments can be made with US currency, cashier’s
checks, or any major credit card (convenience fees applied).  Personal checks will be accepted with a letter of
guarantee from your bank.  You will be given a certificate of sale at that time.  The original land owner has
approximately 16 to 18 months to redeem their property.  During this time, interest will accrue at the rate of 1
percent on the tax amount paid, but not on the surplus paid at the sale.  This money will only be refunded upon
redemption by the owner if you, the purchaser, have followed all guidelines in the codes.

Click here to see a list of the codes and instructions that need to be followed to ensure that your investment is not
jeopardized. Please check www.wv.gov for code updates.  If you have any further questions, please contact our
office Monday thru Friday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM at (304) 822-4720.  However, our only involvement is to
sell the tax lien.  Any questions or concerns regarding steps after the sale should be directed to your attorney.
Tax lien purchases are made at your own risk (that includes tax liens, non-existent land, previously sold property,
etc.) We look forward to seeing you at our annual county tax lien sale.
