SHERIFF'S OFFICE PARTICIPATES IN RED RIBBON WEEK
During the week of October 22-26, 2007 Hampshire County's Schools were participating in the
nationwide celebration of Red Ribbon Week.  This celebration is in honor of a fallen DEA Agent, and
stands as a reminder that kids CAN resist the pressures to use drugs.

On Tuesday, Sgt Norman Launi and Cpl. Jamie Carter conducted a presentation at Romney Elementary
School with approximately 510 students in attendance.  Both officers talked with the students about
peer pressure and the effects that drugs can have on your life.  Sgt. Launi's K-9, Rocket, was also at
the presentation, and showed the students how she finds illegal drugs.  The students also got to see
Rocket "apprehend" Cpl. Carter who was acting as the "bad guy".

On Thursday afternoon, the Romney Middle School D.A.R.E. Program teamed up with the RAZE
Anti-Tobacco Program and presented a school wide assembly.  There were several student speakers,
and skits.  The highlight of the assembly was when Deputy Chris Carroll, of the Hampshire County
Sheriff's Office K-9 Division and Cpl. Carter presented a K-9 demonstration with Deputy Carroll's
partner "Ryker".  The students got to see Ryker detect narcotics, as well as "apprehend" Cpl. Carter.
There was a question and answer session, in which the students got to ask Deputy Carroll questions
about being a K-9 Officer.
